Practical Tips for Writing Academic English that Gets Published

This presentation offers practical tips regarding the process of academic writing, from start to finish, for both publication and conference presentation. Specific tips include advice for choosing an appropriate subject and arguing for its significance; selecting a relevant theory to serve as an analytical frame; how to apply that analytical frame to the chosen subject; making a coherent case via illustrative examples and other artifactual evidence; the importance of connecting that analysis to broader cultural, political, and social concerns; and, summing up a study's key findings and identifying its strengths and weaknesses. Additional tips offer insights into finding a suitable and receptive venue, when in a journal's editorial cycle it is best to submit work, tactics for dealing with writer's block, and common grammar pitfalls to avoid.

Robert Westerfelhaus earned his B.A. from Ohio Dominican College (1994) and his M.A. (1996) and Ph.D.(1999) from Ohio University. He is currently a Professor at the College of Charleston, in South Carolina, where he has been teaching in the Department of Communication since 2002. In 2009-2010, Dr Westerfelhaus was a Fulbright Fellow at UMCS in Lublin, Poland. He has returned to UMCS as a Fulbright Fellow and Distinguished Chair of Humanities for the 2021-2022 academic year. Dr Westerfelhaus has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia articles, about American popular culture as viewed through the dual lenses of rhetoric and semiology.
