Mission and goals

The Doctoral School of Social Sciences (SDNS) at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin was established by the Rector's Order on 24 April 2019, under the Act of 20 July 2018 - Law on Higher Education and Science. The SDNS's activities are based on the Rules and Regulations approved by the UMCS Senate in Resolution No. XXIV-26.8/19 on 24 April 2019, with subsequent amendments adopted in 2020 and 2023.

Our motto comes from the words of Maria Curie Skłodowska, Patron of the University:

"Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood."

SDNS's mission and strategy are based on the UMCS Strategy for 2019–2025. Our goal is to educate modern scientists who are socially responsible and capable of conducting high-quality, significant research for the economy, culture, and society.

Our values are:

  • Scientific and teaching excellence
  • Social responsibility and ethics
  • Openness and internationalization
  • Respect for diversity and equal opportunities
  • Interdisciplinarity and innovation
  • Commitment to regional development

These values align with those outlined in the Doctoral Student Code of Ethics, which was adopted by the UMCS Doctoral Student Council on 4 November 2021. The Code emphasizes the importance of scientific integrity, respect for copyright, commitment to teaching, and academic culture.

SDNS's strategic objectives are divided into two areas:

Research:

  • Improving the quality and recognition of doctoral students' research
  • Increasing participation in national and international projects
  • Supporting research with implementation potential
  • Increasing the number of publications in recognized journals

Teaching:

  • Developing scientific, social, and teaching competencies
  • Promoting the internationalization of doctoral studies
  • Supporting individual development paths
  • Adapting programs to current socio-economic challenges
