Medical insurance

Students from EU/EFTA member countries who have valid national health insurance in their home countries are required to bring with them the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). With this card, they can get free of charge basic medical help in state medical clinics which have contracts with the National Health Fund (NHF).
In Poland, everyone has the right to choose their primary healthcare physician. Accordingly, with EHIC you can register for an appointment with a doctor of your choice at any health centre which signed a contract with the National Health Fund.

Students from non-EU/EFTA member countries are obliged to purchase a private health care and accident insurance in their home countries a private health care and accident insurance including coverage against hospital treatment for the period of their stay in Poland. Alternatively, you can buy a Polish health insurance at the National Health Fund (details below).
You should be aware that in the case of illness or immediate medical assistance, the lack of health insurance may result in high costs of your treatment.
In most cases, the students from non-EU/EFTA countries first have to cover the cost of all medical services and medicines themselves, and only later they are entitled to apply for a reimbursement from their insurance company after having presented the bills.

National Health Fund (NFZ) - Voluntary health insurance
1. Who can conclude an agreement for voluntary health insurance?
- non-EU/EFTA international students and participants in PhD programmes studying and living in the Republic of Poland.
Students from EU/EFTA member countries who have valid national health insurance in their home countries are required to bring with them the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

2. How to sign for voluntary health insurance in the National Health Fund?
 In order to conclude an agreement for voluntary health insurance, you have to visit the relevant Health Fund Branch competent for the place of residence, where you file an "application for voluntary health insurance coverage by the National Health Fund" (you can downolad from the Step 1, in Polish "Krok 1" at https://www.nfz.gov.pl/dla-pacjenta/zalatw-sprawe-krok-po-kroku/jak-ubezpieczyc-sie-dobrowolnie/ ) as well as  a declaration on your insurance status.

3. List of documents necessary to conclude the agreement:
Students and participants in PhD studies, who are not citizens of EU/EFTA member states:
- an identity document (passport, residence card),
- PESEL [National Identification Number] (if any),
- a university certificate confirming studies,
- a document confirming residence on the territory of the Republic of Poland.

 4. The obligations of the insured person arising from signing the agreement:
- registering for a health insurance policy in the Social Security Agency (ZUS) with a ZUS ZZA form within 7 days from signing the agreement,
- paying the insurance contribution up to the 15th of the next month for the previous one,
- paying the contribution rate according to the base for voluntary contribution (which may be subject to change).

5. Rights of the insured person arising from the agreement: A person who has signed a voluntary insurance is entitled to health benefits from the date specified in the agreement; this right expires on the date of agreement termination or upon failure to pay the contributions for a given month(s).

6. Documents necessary to be presented in order to benefit from healthcare services:
The agreement, together with proof of paid contribution for the previous month, constitute the evidence of insurance for the person with voluntary health insurance. Please note that application form (ZUS ZZA) submitted to ZUS constitutes an integral part of the agreement. Please keep one copy of the agreement.
