History

The Chair of Industrial and Environmental Microbiology was created on 1 October 2019 upon the merger of the Department of Industrial Microbiology and the Department of Environmental Microbiology. The origin of the Department of Industrial Microbiology dates back to 1962, when the Chair of Systematic Microbiology was separated from the Chair of General Microbiology. Doc. dr Kazimierz Matusiak was appointed the Head of the new Chair. In 1965, the function was taken over by prof. dr hab. Zbigniew Kawecki, who was the Head for 22 years. He was the creator of the Laboratory of Virology and Immunology as part of the Chair. In 1970, the Chair changed its name to the Department of Applied Microbiology. In 1987, the function of the Department Head was taken by prof. dr hab. Zdzisław Ilczuk. In 1995, the Department was divided into two separate units: the Department of Virology and Immunology and the Department of Industrial Microbiology. The latter was headed by prof. dr hab. Zdzisław Ilczuk in 1995-1999, who was succeeded by prof. dr hab. Janusz Szczodrak, holding the function in 1999-2019. The Department of Environmental Microbiology dates back to 1978, when the Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology was created in the Institute of Microbiology. It was headed by prof. dr hab. Józef Kobus from the Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Puławy. Next, prof. dr hab. Ewa Kurek held this function in 1990-2013. In 1992, the Laboratory was transformed into the Department of Environmental Microbiology. It was headed by dr hab. Jolanta Jaroszuk-Ściseł, prof. UMCS in 2013-2019. On 1 October 2019, two Departments merged into the Chair of Industrial and Environmental Microbiology headed by prof. dr hab. Janusz Szczodrak.

Current research topics:

  • Assessment of the biological activity of polysaccharides isolated from fruiting bodies of Macromycetes;
  • Determination of the prebiotic properties of hydrolysates of fungal α-(1→ 3) glucans (in vitro and in vivo analyses);
  • Investigation of the effect of fungal extracts on the blood coagulation process in humans
  • Biocatalysis of terpenes with the involvement of psychrophilic microorganisms and biomimetic catalysts targeted at production of bioactive compounds with flavouring-fragrance and medicinal properties;
  • Evaluation of the biological activity of porphyrins against pathogenic microorganisms;
  • Investigation of the mechanisms of activity of porphyrin derivatives against intracellular parasites of bees;
  • Biological protection of plants against fungal infections and microbiological stimulation of plant growth with emphasis on methods based on phytohormonal effects and induction of plant resistance by elicitors derived from fungal and plant cell walls and from exopolymers produced by fungal and bacterial strains, including psychrotrophic strains;
  • Verification of the effectiveness of biocontrol and bio-fertilisation formulations in field studies, monitoring of heavy metal contamination of soil and plants, and assessment of the effectiveness of bioremediation (including phytoremediation) of contaminated soils
