Automatic delimitation algorithms in loess relief studies

We would like to announce a recent article by Dr hab. Leszek Gawrysiak and  Prof. Dr hab. Waldemar Kociuba (Department of Geology, Soil Science and Geoinformation UMCS) published in Remote Sensing:

Gawrysiak L., Kociuba W., 2023. LiDAR-Derived Relief Typology of Loess Patches (East Poland). Remote Sensing 15, 7, 1875. https://doi.org/10.3390/rs15071875

The paper presents the first application of algorithms for automatic delimitation of geomorphometric features (geomorphons) to develop typology of loess areas of the eastern part of the Polish Uplands belt. Geomorphons are derived from NMT and classify landforms into 10 categories, based on defined parameters. The relief maps of loess patches presented by use of geomorphons were used to analyze the internal differentiation of patches and separate areas characterized by a certain degree of similarity. On this basis, 3 main types and 8 subtypes of relief were separated. This is the first application of such methods to quantitative relief analysis for loess areas of Poland. The applied geomorphometric approach will contribute to a better understanding of the spatial differentiation of the relief of loess patches.
