Spectrophotometry for studying soil properties

We are pleased to announce that the latest issue of Sensors has published an article on topics that are part of the "intelligent land management" trend, authored by Dr. Piotr Bartminski and Dr. Marcin Siłuch (Department of Geology, Soil Science and Geoinformation, UMCS):

Debaene Guillaume, Piotr BartmińskiMarcin Siłuch, 2023. In Situ VIS-NIR Spectroscopy for a Basic and Rapid Soil Investigation, Sensors 23, 12, 5495. https://doi.org/10.3390/s23125495

The research involved investigating the use of a VIS-NIR spectrometer to measure soil reflectance in situ, in fields in eastern Poland. Bare soils, devoid of vegetation, were scanned. The spectral spectra obtained were used to predict C, N content, as well as soil grain size. The best results were achieved for carbon content, followed by nitrogen content. Remote measurement techniques were shown to have a high potential in the context of investigating basic soil properties; however, the creation of specific proecdurings requires further in-depth research.
