We are pleased to inform you that an article titled "Inside and Outside a Burial Mound: When, How and in What Environment Were the Kurgans Built by Late Neolithic Communities on the Subcarpathian Loess Plateau (SE Poland)?" has been published on the Geological Quarterly website: http://dx.doi.org/10.7306/gq.1702. The first and leading author is Prof. Dr. hab. Maria Łanczont (Department of Geomorphology and Paleogeography, UMCS).

Łanczont M., Nogaj-Chachaj J., Żogała B., Komar M., 2023. Inside and outside a burial mound: when, how and in what environment were the kurgans built by Late Neolithic communities on the Subcarpathian loess plateau (SE Poland)? Geol. Q. 67.

This publication concerns the methods of non-invasive and minimally invasive studies of prehistoric burial mounds, associated with the Corded Ware culture population, located on the hilltops of the Subcarpathian Kańczuga loess plateau and the environmental conditions accompanying and conditioning the construction of such structures.

A team of multi-disciplinary experts embarked on an exciting journey to uncover the secrets of ancient burial mounds near Jarosław, nestled in lush forested areas. They used a blend of geomorphology, geology, geophysics, and pollen analysis to delve into the mysteries of these remarkably well-preserved prehistoric sites. Their mission? To piece together how these mounds were built, the rituals that might have accompanied burials, and to recreate the surrounding natural landscape as it would have appeared during the Holocene era. Their findings not only shed light on these ancient structures but also open up discussions about protecting such archaeological sites from the ravages of time and human interference. This novel study, a first of its kind in Poland, joins a growing movement in Europe to study and preserve invaluable historical sites without causing them irreversible harm.

This article will be part of a special volume of Geological Quarterly (2024), which is the aftermath of the loess conference organized by our Institute in Jarosław on October 6-8, 2022. The editors of the volume are Prof. Dr. Maria Łanczont,  Dr. hab. Przemysław Mroczek, Prof. UMCS (our Institute) and Dr. Wojciech Granoszewski (PIG-PIB).
