Living tradition – the heritage of collective identity

Lublin, December 8–9, 2022

International scientific conference Living tradition – the heritage of collective identity organized by the Institute of Linguistics and Literary Studies MCSU, Institute of Cultural Sciences MCSU, Student Research Circle of Ethnolinguists MCSU, the Polish Ethnomusicological Seminar, the Academic Center of Culture and Media "Chatka Żaka" MCSU, "Pismo Folkowe" and the Association of the Folk Movement Animators will be held on 8–9 December 2022 at the Academic Center for Culture and Media "Chatka Żaka" MCSU and will be part of the XXXII International Folk Music Festival "Mikołajki Folkowe".

We would like to devote this year's meeting to the subject of broadly understood tradition. What forms did and does it take? How do the people remember and pass on their own tradition, and how is it recorded in the memory of other groups? We are particularly interested in how this "folk remembrance" influences the shape of modern identity. What is the place of tradition, heritage and remembrance of them in the modern world? How do they influence our subjectivity? We invite representatives of various disciplines interested in this subject to creative reflection.

Suggested issues:

  • living tradition,
  • tradition and intangible cultural heritage,
  • forms of tradition,
  • memory of tradition,
  • folk tradition versus identity and subjectivity,
  • tradition and the folk music message,
  • the role of musical traditions in shaping identity,
  • contemporary movements, trends and communities that build identity based on tradition,
  • interpreting traditions in the contemporary culture.

The conference will open with a discussion panel attended by experts invited by the organizers: prof. dr Kristina Rutkowska (Centrum Polonistyczne Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, Wilno), dr hab. Aleksandra Niewiara, prof. UŚ (IJP UŚ, Katowice), dr hab. Marta Wójcicka, prof. UMCS (INoKSiM UMCS, Lublin), dr Jaśmina Korczak-Siedlecka (DHIW, Warszawa).
