25th of May is Africa Day. This date was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the Organization of African Unity in 1963. The University of Warmia and Mazury have been organizing Africa Days every year since 2004. One of events is the interdisciplanary conference. This year the theme of the conference is “Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Facts and forecasts”. Due to the pandemic, the conference was organized for the second time in its history on-line. Although many regretted that they could not come to Olsztyn, the advantage of this situation was hosting guests from all over the world: Poland, Angola, Senegal and Australia.

The organizers Prof. Anna Ndiaye and Dr hab. Bara Ndiaye (who had been a guest at the UMCS Faculty of Economics in 2019) cordially welcomed all guests including His Excellence Ambassador of Senegal in Poland and Ukraine Papa Diop. Prof. Andrzej Szmyt (the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities) and Dr hab. Irena Makarczyk (the Director of the Institute of History and International Relations) also participated in the opening of the conference.

On the first day of the conference (24th of May) the keynote speaker was Dr hab. Ewa Cieślik from the University of Economics in Poznań who analyzed perspectives of the economic development of the continent after launching the African Continental Free Trade Area. Other presenters from Warszawa, Poznań, Kraków, Olsztyn and Dąbrowa Górnicza described the nature of pandemic in Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola and Senegal, the relations between China and Africa, the presence of Africa in Russian media as well as the impact of COVID-19 on African languages (Swahili, Amharic and Hausa).

On the second day of the conference (25th of May at 12:00) a discussion in French will take place. Dr Konrad Czernichowski from UMCS will take part in the debate “Ways of recovery of Africa after the COVID-19 pandemic” (Quels voies et moyens pour relancer l’économie africaine après la pandemie de la Covid-19). Other panelists include: Keita Balde (Angola), Moustapha Barry and Ibrahima Diallo (Australia), Alioune Dème, Amacoudou Diouf, El Hadj Magatte, Souleymane Anta Ndiaye, Ibou Ngom, Ousmane Aly Pame and Moustapha Sall (Senegal), Jean Diatta and Pape Samba Ndiaye (Poland). It will be moderated by Bara Ndiaye. All are most welcome to participate in the discussion: https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fus02web.zoom.us%2Fj%2F87315028151%3Fpwd%3DVmxQeFd6Y20xWGV1Ukw4UHJvVDNMdz09&sa=D&source=calendar&usd=2&usg=AOvVaw0z3l8mhAciBw0F1T8eDQGQ
