About Us

History

Department of World Economy was created in 1989 as a subdivision of the Institute of Economics at the Faculty of Economics MCSU. Initially, the head of the Department was prof. Maria Ciepielewska (1989-1992). In 1992-2019 the position was held by prof. Bogumiła Mucha-Leszko, who was awarded Jean Monnet Chair in economics of European integration by the European Commission (in 1995) and thus the name of the Department was amended to Department of World Economy and European Integration. In 2009, it became Chair of World Economy and European Integration. Since Oct. 1st 2019 until Sep. 30th 2020 the Chair was headed by prof. Piotr Witkowski and since Oct. 1st 2020 dr hab. Paweł Pasierbiak became the new Head.

Main scientific and didactic projects

Lecture (permament course) financed by a European Commission grant PL 93/048: Integracja europejska, jej implikacje zewnętrzne i perspektywy dla Polski (European economic integration, its external effects and Polish perspectives), 1993-1997.

Didactic grant of the European Commission Jean Monnet Chair in Economics of the European Integration PL 95/014 (prof. dr hab. B. Mucha-Leszko), lectures on European integration realized by our Staff in 1995-2002.

Research Grant  of the European Commission PL 95/015 Socio-Economic Aspects of Poland’s Adjustment towards the European Union Standards (prof. dr hab. B. Mucha-Leszko). As a result of our Staff research a monograph by the same title was published.

Didactic project of the European Commission Tempus Jep 09169/95 (European Studies – Curricula Development), realized in 1996-1998. Main coordinator was European Institute in Łódź. Local coordinator : prof. dr hab. B. Mucha-Leszko. Exchange of Staff and students.

Tempus programmes were realized in cooperation with (among others):  University of Kent (Canterbury), University of Hull, Unviersity of Sussex (Brighton), University College Dublin, European University Institute (Florence).

Eurall Project „The Euro and the enlargement. A single currency for a reunified Europe” – research grant of the European Commission Agreement no. 2001 – 1619/001 – 001 CEN CENTRE. Main coordinator: University in Brescia (Italy), other participants: University of Marmara in Istanbul (Turkey) and Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (World Economy and European Integration Department). Local coordinator of the project prof. dr hab. B. Mucha-Leszko. Results were published in Europe: Reunification, Enlargement, Single Currency, A. Santagostino (ed.), Cooperativa Libraria Universitaria Bresciana, Brescia 2003.

Significant participation of our Staff in classes realised for the 7 editions of postgraduate studies "Mechanizmy funkcjonowania strefy euro" (“Mechanisms of the functioning of the euro area”) at the Faculty of Economics MCSU in 2009-2016. Study programmes were financed by National Bank of Poland and carried out in all Polish regions using the same programme elaborated by NBP. Our Staff also prepared the grant applications and headed the studies during 6 editions (prof. dr hab. B. Mucha-Leszko and dr Magdalena Kąkol).

Postgraduate studies  "Zarządzanie Funduszami Europejskimi"  („Managment of the EU Funds”) financed by the European Commission grant within the Human Capital Operating Programme, European Social Fund, project no. 1.45:  "Kształcenie kadry zarządzającej instytucji pomocy i integracji społecznej" at the Faculty of Economics in 2011/12. Manager of the study programme dr M. Kąkol.

Tempus ELISAA (E-Learning Innovation and Sustainable Albanian Agriculture) 530531-TEMPUS-1-2012-1-IT-TEMPUS-JPHES, financed by the European Commission grant.  Main coordinator: Universita degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro (Włochy), local coordinator dr hab. P. Pasierbiak. Project timeframe: 2012-2015. Elaboration of the training programme for entrepreneurs of the agri-food sector in Albania and preparation of e-learning materials and lectures.

Participation in a project financed by the European Commission Erasmus+ Jean Monnet program "Building bridges with Europe and with the World” (2014-2017). Head of the research: prof. A. Santagostino (Ankara Yildirim Beyazit Universitesi). Institutions participating in the project: Istanbul Kemerburgaz University, Istanbul Marmara University, Izmir Dokuz Eylul University, Transilvania University of Brashov and Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. PArticipation in a project financed by the European Commission “Heart of Anatolia European Centre of Excellence” (2017-2020), Erasmus+ Jean Monnet program grant. Head of the research: prof. A. Santagostino (Ankara Yildirim Beyazit Universitesi). Institutions participating in the project:  Eskişehir Ozmangazi University, Izmir Dokuz Eylul University, Necmettin Erbakan University (Konya), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, Newcastle University, Global Policy Institute (London), Center for Free Enterprise - Florida Southern College in Lakeland and University of São Paulo.  Participation in a project EACEA: Establishing a Europe-Asia Research Network on Strategies for Promoting Europe-Asia Connectivity (SPEAC)  Erasmus+, Jean Monnet Network grant (611044-EPP-1-2019-1-KR-EPPJMO-NETWORK). Realized in 2019-2022. Main Coordinator of the project was: prof. Sung Hoon Park (Korea University), other institutions in the consortium: Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany), Uppsala University (Sweden), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin. From MCSU participants of the project were: dr hab. Tomasz Białowąs (participant), dr hab. Paweł Pasierbiak (local coordinator and participant) and dr Katarzyna Twarowska-Mól (Junior Research Fellow).
