Research contributions
Heribert Insam (HI) has a high expertise in the field of microbial ecology, ranging from basic to applied research. HI published more than 200 scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals (cited > 10,000 times), his Hirsch-Index is 67 (Google Scholar) and 51 (Web of Science). Initially, the main focus was soil microbiology, since 2007, his central research field became biological waste treatment, including composting, anaerobic digestion and molecular ecology. HI always viewed applied soil microbiology in context with ecological issues, but also in the context of applied science which is reflected in the co-ownership of the spin-off company BiotreaT GmbH, Innsbruck. Outreach activities were always important, as was the connection of Arts and Science. HI has supervised >60 Master’s Thesis and 15 PhD Theses. He is Editor of four books published by Springer: Microbial Communities. Functional versus structural approaches [1997], Microbiology of Composting [2002], Microbes at work [2010] and Recycling of Biomass ashes [2012]. Further, HI is currently Editor-in-Chief of the journal Applied Soil Ecology and Editorial Board Member of Microorganisms, Anaerobe and Bioresource Technology. Apart from his main affiliations, HI has been working in Argentina, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, France, Italy, México, South Africa and Thailand.
