River conservation in India - mapping and modelling of fluvial resources

This article, focusing on the extraction of sand and gravel from rivers (known as RSM) in India, represents a breakthrough in the field of environmental protection and natural resource management. The authors have successfully developed an innovative mapping methodology that allowed for the collection of extensive data from 808 river segments. These data, indicating that 61.6% of the studied areas showed traces of RSM, are an impressive testament to the scale of the problem, but also to the potential for its resolution. Particularly noteworthy is how the authors identified and analyzed factors influencing RSM, emphasizing the importance of growing demand for sand in urbanized areas.

An extremely important achievement of this work is the development of a model and map that can predict areas susceptible to RSM in India. These tools not only raise awareness of the effects of extracting sand and gravel from rivers but also offer practical solutions for planners and decision-makers. This work is an excellent example of how science can contribute to a better understanding and management of natural resources, contributing to sustainable development and environmental protection.
