The lecture part of the Night of Owls 2022 at UMCS consisted of several lectures, which allowed the audience to gain a comprehensive knowledge of owls. The dean of the Faculty attended the event, dr hab. Joanna Czarnecka, prof. UMCS officially started the meeting.
The first of the lectures were in the form of a comprehensive lexicon of knowledge about these birds. During the following lectures, the audience learned how to observe owls, how these birds present themselves in culture and what symbols are associated with them; they got to know species like human surroundings and even expanded their knowledge about night butterflies. The meeting gathered dozens of people from all over the country, despite much competition in the form of beautiful weather outside the window.
About 30 people took part in the field trip. The weather was very conducive to listening and observing owls. A full moon appeared in the sky, making flashlights practically redundant. The participants could learn the rules of moving in the forest at night, listen to stories about the research of owls in our province and talk to the teachers about various ornithological (not only owls) matters.
The Tawny Owls from the Old Grove did not disappoint. After the first voice stimulation, two males and a female spoke very close to one group. It turned out that the second group heard the male. After less than an hour, no one could not hear the owl among the trip participants. The first group later found another female.
- It is fantastic to be able to hear and see an owl! Moreover, still, see your shadow at night in the moonlight!
- Such things are not done every day! - said the participants.
