About us

The Faculty of History and Archaeology of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University was established on 1 September 2021. It was separated from the Faculty of Humanities, established in 1952. The Faculty of History and Archaeology is one of the youngest faculties at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The Faculty has two research institutes: the Institute of Archaeology (https://www.umcs.pl/pl/archeo.htm) and the Institute of History ( https://www.umcs.pl/pl/historia.htm).

The main direction of research activities of the staff of the Institute of Archaeology is prehistoric and early mediaeval archaeology with a particular focus on the areas of Poland and Eastern Europe, European Barbaricum, and eastern non-European territories. The Institute of History conducts research into local history and the problem of the formation of historical communities of nations and their interdependence. The structure of the Institute of History includes 6 departments: the Department of Ancient and Medieval History, the Department of 16th -19 th Century History and Eastern Europe, the Department of Methodology and Research of the 20th -21 st Century, the Department of Archival Science and Auxiliary Sciences of History, the Department of Social History and Education, the Department of Digital Humanities and the Methodology of History.

Both Institutes are staffed by internationally renowned researchers. The Institute of Archaeology is one of the best in the country.

The mission of the Faculty is to educate students at the highest level based on the latest scientific developments and innovative technologies used in the modern world. We combine traditional research and teaching methods with various technological developments, such as 3D printing, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, GPR, and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). Our students gain knowledge through a wide range of theoretical and practical classes, as well as through field exercises and specialised work placements.

We educate at the bachelor's and master's level, in 7 fields of study: archaeology, archival science and modern information records management, history, historical tourism, Mediterranean studies, historical and archaeological geovisualisation, and geoarchaeology. The language of instruction is Polish.

Numerous student organisations are active at the Faculty: the Research Club of Oratory Historians, the Research Club of Auxiliary Sciences of History, the Research Club of Landscape Studies, the Research Club of Archivists, the Research Club of the Admirers of Antiquity, the Student Research Club of Epigraphers "Exploratio", the Research Club of Student Historians, the Methodological Club of Historians, and the Research Club of Archaeology Students.

The Faculty Council of the Student Government, on the other hand, is the place for those who want to develop organisational skills and actively participate in the work and life of the Faculty, including, among other things, collegiate bodies, subject teams, and various faculty and university-wide events.
