The aim of our Sustainability Management BSc programme is to prepare sustainability specialists, managers and experts, successfully implementing solutions that help to achieve business and social development goals without depletion of natural resources. Our graduates will be ready to forecast and identify the most pressing problems of the contemporary world, to analyse them, and to evaluate ecological and human risks. They will also be able to design solutions to various crisis situations in the human environment related, among others, to climate change, natural disasters, water resource deficits, ecosystem transformation, biodiversity reduction, energy security, etc.

What makes our programme so unique?

We offer interdisciplinary and complex approach to the sustainability idea and integrate environmental, social sciences and civil engineering to make the earth more sustainable. We use the potential of specialists from many fields of expertise – as a response to the complexity of the problems of modern sustainability management and economies. Academic staff involved in the programme is a multidisciplinary team of experts from various Faculties of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (including the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Economics), as well as from the Lublin University of Technology and the University of Life Sciences in Lublin.

The programme is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations. It delivers curriculum balanced between environmental strategies and socio-economic development and is consistent with the state-of-the-art and the priorities of the European Union policy (Green Deal, Circular Bioeconomy, Digital Transformation, Jobs & Growth, Social Protection & Health). In particular the programme focuses on such issues as biodiversity, climate change, smart agriculture and food production, sustainable tourism, and urban development.

We offer practice-oriented understanding of the idea of sustainable development. We provide students with a wide range of practical skills to maximise positive environmental and social impact of their future activities and decisions. Students will learn how to get data, how to transform and use them to achieve the sustainable development goals. They will know tools to monitor and forecast the existing and potential environmental situations, risk exposure and control mechanisms. They will be able to build strategies and take actions towards sustainable development on the local and global scale.

Key competencies of graduates

  • Deep understanding of mechanisms and dynamics of the environment and interdependence between its components.
  • Conducting environmental monitoring, assessing the quality of its components, processing and presenting data.
  • Ability to analyse and forecast changes in the environment in the context of various human activities.
  • Strategic planning, designing and implementing solutions for sustainable socio-economic development, in particular for agriculture and food production, for urban planning and tourism.
  • Providing expert environmental advice to implement sustainable practices.
  • Initiating partnerships and taking complex action for sustainable development.
  • Problem solving, creativity, the ability to develop innovative solutions to new and complex challenges, using unconventional means.
  • Critical thinking, making reliable judgements and decisions
  • Negotiating, creating persuasive arguments, promoting sustainable development goals.
  • A sense of responsibility for the environment, eagerness to spread the idea of ethical behaviour and consumption.

Job opportunities

Sustainability management degree programme prepares students to be national and global leaders in sustainable development. Their careers are available in a variety of industries and areas of specialization. Graduates will be prepared to work in all types of organizations, companies and institutions that aim to build more environmentally friendly practices. They may be employed as analysts, consultants, planners, managers, directors or educators.

In particular graduates are expected to be engaged in:

  • environmental protection institutions and organizations at the local, state and global levels,
  • scientific, research, and strategy implementation institutes, including: biological, chemical, hydrological, water and wastewater and waste laboratories, etc,
  • local and state government agencies and departments,
  • regulatory bodies, think tanks, charities, NGOs and international organisations,
  • expert panels designing, evaluating, and monitoring projects for sustainable development,
  • institutions and companies in various sectors of the economy implementing sustainable development policies,
  • non-governmental organizations monitoring, organizing and supporting activities for sustainable development,
  • educational institutions of all levels.

Graduates have the opportunity to continue their studies at the second level in related fields around the world.

Opportunities during your studies        

You will gain the most up-to-date knowledge within the courses related to the environment (including climate change and its consequences, natural hazards, water management problems, waste management, responsible management of environmental resources, protection of natural ecosystems and biodiversity); socio-economic issues (focused on specific models of economic development and social life, impact of environmental changes on social interactions); management (management and leadership as mechanisms of planning and implementation of tasks). You will acquire a broad variety of practical skills compatible with the obtained knowledge, learn modern methods, techniques and tools used in the implementation of tasks related to the idea of sustainable development, such as assessment of the quality of individual elements of the environment, valuation of environmental resources, forecasting of phenomena and processes, or simulation of environmental changes and data visualization. You will work in the lab and in the field, you will implement your knowledge and skills through case studies allowing direct observation and analysis of environmental problems, as well as developing practical solutions for sustainable development.

Individual learning pathways – you might be able to choose between tracks offering specialization in following areas: Ecosystem Services for Sustainable Governance, Energy and Technology for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production, Sustainable Urban Development, Crisis and Disaster Management.

Development and cooperation – you may be active in numerous Students Scientific Clubs (e.g. Student Scientific Club of Biologists, Microbiologists, Biochemists, Biotechnologists, Neurobiologists, Phytochemists, Animal-Plant Interaction Students’ Group, Nature Photographers, Geographers). You may also take part in interesting research projects, educational actions and events popularizing science (e.g. Earth Day, World Wetland Day, Fascination of Plants Day, Night of Biologists, Lublin Science Festival).

Comprehensive soft (human) skills – you will learn to solve problems, analyse data, be creative and influence reality; independently and in teams. These are key skills for your future career.

The whole world at your fingertips – you will join the unique multicultural, multinational society of our University located in Lublin – being an academic city and European Youth Capital 2023. You will meet students from all over the world and reputable international team of academic teachers and researchers. Moreover, in frame of student exchange programmes (e.g. Erasmus+) you can spend one semester studying at universities abroad (including in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Portugal, Hungary and Turkey).

The Sustainability Management BSc programme is delivered in compliance with European teaching standards. Therefore, our graduates may choose to continue studying at master degree level at UMCS or elsewhere in Poland or in the European Union countries.

The study programme does not include internship.
