Abstract:

Many biologically and industrially relevant interfaces are decorated with polymers and surfactants. Understanding the structure and interactions at such soft interfaces is thus critically important. Using a version of the surface force apparatus (SFA), we have measured forces between a pair of surfaces bearing polymer brushes [1], surfactant bilayers [2], and bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, Ra mutants) layers [3] . The implications of the results to the lubrication process in biological living systems and the structural integrity of gram-negative bacteria outer membranes will be discussed.
