Early Career Researchers Workshops 2021

The European International Studies Association (EISA) is inviting proposals for Early Career Researchers Workshops (ECW) linked to the next EISA Pan-European Conferencetaking place online in September 2021.

ECWs are one-day workshops organized by and for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who finished their PhD less than three years prior to the application deadline. Eight to twelve participants use the workshop to present and discuss their work. Each workshop should include one or two senior discussants for feedback and coaching of the early career researchers. Organized around an overarching theme or question, the workshops can be used for several purposes, including gaining experience in academic conference presentation; increasing visibility and networks of early career researchers and their research agendas; developing new ideas; building up a research proposal; and/or preparing publications.

Early career workshops offer a collegial, supportive and safe environment for PhD candidates and Early career scholars to present their work and test their ideas and research findings.

The workshops can be held on a day of choice, but we suggest September 9 or September 10, 2021 as suitable dates. These are the days in advance of the EISA online annual PEC conference.

EISA will provide support to up to four new ECWs this year. Support includes technical support and the use of the conference. Early career workshop participants will receive a discount of on their conference registration costs (making the conference fee 100 instead of 140). Senior academics who participate in the early career workshop are not eligible for such discount. Early career workshop convenors will be offered a small budget for expenses and meals on the day of the workshop (max €150, depending on actual expenses made). Workshop conveners will receive the ECW grant as a lump sum. They will need to provide an  overview of participants in order for the conference discount to be applied. Conveners are responsible for offering EISA a publicity statement and a short report after the workshop.

Please send your application for an Early Career workshop, including workshop themes, provisional list of (committed) speakers and proposed date to prof. Marieke de Goede at m.degoede@uva.nl,  by May 14, 2021. Please include a short statement on how you will provide a safe space and supportive environment to early career researchers in your workshop. It is not compulsory this year that speakers are also participants of the EISA-PEC main conference.
