Personal information

He was born in Przegaliny, Podlasie region, Sept. 27, 1946. After graduation from the Chemical Technical School in Lublin, he studied chemistry at the Mathematical-Physical-Chemical Faculty of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (1966-1971). After graduation with the Master of Science degree in chemistry (1971), he started working in the Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Lublin. After 4 months, in February 1972, he moved to the research-technical post in the newly founded Department of Radiochemistry and Application of Radioisotopes (of the Math-Phys-Chem Faculty), headed by prof. dr hab. Jerzy Szczypa.

Initial 2-year period of his new job was mostly devoted to the organization of the Department - mainly acquisition and setup of scientific and laboratory equipment, as well as organizing the didactic process. In 1974 he was promoted to the position of research and teaching assistant. He obtained his PhD degree in 1980 at the Mat-Phys-Chem Faculty for the thesis "Radiochemical Investigation of the Interactions of Polymer and Surfactant Molecules at the Calcium Carbonate Surface " („Radiochemiczne badania oddziaływań cząstek polimeru i surfaktanta na powierzchni węglanu wapniowego”), supervised by professor Jerzy Szczypa.

He commenced the research on the adsorption of macromolecules at the interface of the system composed of the highly dispersed solid and polymer solution. His investigations lead to the habilitation thesis on the "Studies on the mechanism of adsorption of polymer macromolecules at the interface of solid/aqueous solution system - surface conformations" ("Studia nad mechanizmem adsorpcji makrocząsteczek polimeru na granicy faz ciało stałe/roztwór wodny – konformacje powierzchniowe"). He passed his habilitation colloquium in November 1990 and obtained habilitation degree in the following year. In 1995 he obtained the position of professor extraordinary in the Faculty of Chemistry, MCS Univ. In April 2002 he obtained the degree of professor.

He is interested in several topics, mainly: mechanism of adsorption and surface conformations of polymers at the interface of the solid/polymer solution system; structure of electrical double layer in the presence of polymer; migration of the radioisotopes in the environment (soils, waters, alluvial sediments, bottom sediments, plants); influence of the kind of soil minerals on adsorption and accumulation of radionuclides and heavy metals in the top soil layer and sediments of superficial waters; transfer of radioactive elements from soils to plants. He published 184 papers including many scientific papers in high Impact Factor journals of the so-called Philadelphia List: in the period 1991-2003 his papers have been cited ca. 130 times.

He supervised 5 doctors theses. He headed several grants of the KBN (Polish Scientific Reasearch Committee, Komitet Badań Naukowych) and a grant of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, Austria). The Department of Radiochemistry and Colloid Chemistry, headed by him since 1999, collaborates with several foreign institutions, like: Institute of Surface Chemistry and Institute of Colloid Chemistry and Water Chemistry (Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, ANU, Kiev, Ukraine), Institute of Marine Biology (Russian Academy of Sciences, Murmansk, Russia) and Jozef Stefan Institute (Lubljana, Slovenia). Among close Polish collaborators is the Central Institute for Radiological Protection (CLOR, Warsaw). He visited or stayed in Research Center and International Research Center in Chernobyl (Chernobyl, Ukraine), Ivan Franko University (Lviv, Ukraine), Technical University (Polytechnical Institute, Kiev) and Agricultural University (Kiev).

He is a member of: Editorial Board of „Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing” yearly; Commision for Nuclear and Radiation Chemistry of the State Atomic Agency; Editorial Committee of the Polish-Ukrainian conferences on „Theoretical and Experimental Studies of Interfacial Phenomena and Their Technological Applications”. He is also a member of Scientific Boards of Institute of Chemistry and Nuclear Technique (IChTJ, Warsaw) and Central Institute for Radiological Protection (CLOR, Warsaw). In the 1996-2002 period he was vice-dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (student and didactic matters). In the following years 2002-2005 he was vice-rector of the MCS Univ. (student and teaching matters). He works in many University Senate and Faculty commissions.

His wife, Grażyna, teaches chemistry at the Textile School Group and 23rd Grammar School in Lublin. His son Grzegorz is an economist and works in Raiffeisen Bank as District Risk Manager. His daughter Anna works as an assistant in the Chair of Agro- and Food Industrial Technology and Preservation of the Agricultural University, Lublin.

He spends his leisure time hiking with his family in Polish and Slovak Tatra Mountains. He also likes walking and mushroom picking in the quiet of local forests.
