Virtual Days of Science in Lublin: Is it possible to create sociology of COVID-19?

During the Wednesday broadcast of Virtual Days of Science in Lublin on 23 of September, dr hab. Włodzimierz Piątkowski, Prof from the Department of Social Health Problems at the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of UMCS will talk about the sociological aspects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The sociology of COVID-19

Questions were asked about the effects of the pandemic on various aspects of collective life and it all boiled down to a discussion on the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic. In the arena of the social science research and its sub disciplines the scope centred on the nature of the Impact of the SARS COV-2 pandemic on the nature of modern sociology health, disease and medicine. So far, no effective SARS-COV-2 vaccine has been developed and there is no effective therapy against this disease. Medical strategies now hinge upon symptomatic treatment, improvement of intensive therapy techniques, optimal supervision over convalescents. In other words social aspects have come to the fore Such as, using the methods of persuasion and “social engineering” to convince fellow citizens to behave cautiously, self-isolate responsibly, respect the principles of social distancing and practicing the habits of daily prophylaxis.

Dr hab. Włodzimierz Piątkowski, prof. UMCS 

Is the head and the founder of the independent Medical Sociology Laboratory of the Medical University of Lublin, founded in 1995. His main areas of interest are sociology of health, health promotion, sociology of medicine, sociology of non-medical treatment and eco sociology. Noteworthy, Dr hab. Włodzimierz Piątkowski has served in many different capacities- Coordinator for activities of the European Society of sociology of Health and Medicine (ESHMS) in Poland 1990, Chairperson  of the Sociology of Medicine Section of the Polish Sociological Society,2001-2013. Advisor to the Polish-U.S. Fulbright Commission administering the Scholarship Program, 2005-2006. Head of the Department of Sociology of Medicine and Family of the Institute of Sociology,2013. Founded and also worked as the Editor of the Sociology of Health and Illness section of the Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine. Also, he has authored over 200 publications, most prominently "The problem of women enrolling in smear tests in Poland. An attempt at a socio-medical analysis ”(OPUS3, 2011/03 / B / HS6), (including articles with IF 3.06 and the score of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education - 25) and the monograph "Beyond Medicine. Non-Medical Methods of Treatment in Poland "(2012) reviewed in the Medical Sociology Online journal (Volume 7, Issue 1, February 2013), as well as" From Medicine to Sociology. In addition, he is the recipient of awards such as - E. Prosta Scientific award by the Lublin Scientific Society (2014) and the Golden Cross of Merit (2019).

To date, he serves as the  head of Department of Social Health Problems of Institute of Sociology at UMCS a position he took over in October 2019.
