Open events at the University

Popular science events:

  • A series of newspaper articles published in Kurier Lubelski, exploring the life and discoveries of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (January-December 2017);
  • An exhibition highlighting the life and scientific achievements of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (June 2017);
  • A representative of Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s family visits Lublin at the invitation of UMCS (November 2017);
  • An inaugural lecture on the life and scientific achievements of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (23rd October 2017);
  • A popular science conference honouring Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s birthday, jointly held by the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science (7th November 2017);
  • An exhibition displaying postage stamps and banknotes featuring the likeness of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (November 2017);
  • A thesis competition for UMCS students who, in their dissertation, explored the life and/or works of Maria Curie-Skłodowska.

Artisitc events:

  • A special screening of a film presenting Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s life, followed by a panel discussion with the leading actors (February 2017);
  • An exhibition “Maria and flowers” in the Botanical Garden of UMCS (July-August 2017);
  • A musical inspired by Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s life story and a monodrama “Me, Maria” (23rd October 2017);
  • A concert to mark the anniversary of Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s birth (7th November);
  • An art competition “Paint the chemical element. Technique of choice” for university and secondary school students held by “Chatka Żaka”, the academic cultural centre of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
  • Tours of Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw (new location), including scientific lectures, for UMCS staff, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. (November-December 2017).

Events for secondary school students:

  • A nation-wide quiz for secondary school students interested in the life and works of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (March-November 2017);
  • A grant competition for partner schools of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (2nd half of 2017);
  • Open university lectures for secondary school students held by academic staff of the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science (March-November 2017);
  • A series of lectures for students at partner universities in Ukraine (March-November 2017).

University media activities

University News monthly magazine:

  • A special edition of University News dedicated to Maria Curie-Skłodowska after whom the university is named (October 2017);
  • A series of articles in University News describing the life and works of Maria Curie-Skłodowska, written by the UMCS staff.

Radio Centrum:

  • A weekly radio series exploring the life and works of Maria Curie-Skłodowska (February-December 2017).

UMCS TV:

  • TV coverage of anniversary celebrations held by UMCS; videos published on You Tube channel, UMCS TV Facebook fan page and UMCS TV website;
  • A promotional video for UMCS in Lublin and Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw;
  • A series of interviews dedicated to Maria Curie-Skłodowska, covering topics such as: “Maria Curie-Skłodowska – a modern woman”; “How to interpret the achievements of the Nobel prize winner today?”, “Maria Curie-Skłodowska as a University patron”, “Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s footprints in Lublin”, “The mystery of Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s signature”, “The monument of Maria Curie-Skłodowska on the Maria Curie-Skłodowska square”, etc.;
  • A TV programme about Maria Curie Scientific Prize (the prize funded by UMCS is granted to individual scientists or groups of scientists for their groundbreaking achievements and discoveries in a given field of research) or inventions that were inspired by Maria Curie-Skłodowska’s discoveries.
