Modern Technologies in the Protection of Apple Orchards – ORCHARDSCAN Project

In January, the implementation of the ORCHARDSCAN project, funded by the National Centre for Research and Development, began as part of the Innoglobo competition.

The aim of the project is to develop a preliminary system to support decision-making in combating pests and diseases in apple orchards.

The project is being carried out by a consortium led by the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography. The partners include UMCS in Lublin, the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Sapienza University of Rome, and Orbify.

On behalf of UMCS, the project is being implemented by Dr. Marcin Siłuch and Dr. Piotr Bartmiński. Their tasks include developing a methodology for acquiring low-altitude data under various weather scenarios and selected phenological phases, as well as acquiring multispectral and hyperspectral data from low-altitude aerial platforms and satellite sources in the visible, near-infrared, and thermal ranges, synchronized with ground-based data.

In the final phase of the project, an analysis will be conducted to explore the potential for integrating various data sources to develop new methods for monitoring agricultural pests.

The total project budget amounts to PLN 1,499,975, with UMCS's share being PLN 421,112.
