Delegation from KU Leuven at UMCS

Since April 2, the UMCS has been hosting a group of graduates of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Belgian Katholieke Universiteit (KU) Leuven: university staff, teachers, and spatial planning consultants. The spring visit is part of an on-going study visit entitled 'The qualities of Poland's geodiversity'.

Professor Wojciech Zgłobicki, Head of the Department of Geology, Soil Science and Geoinformation and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Spatial Management at the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University, is the supervisor and co-author of the study visit programme entitled "Geodiversity of Poland".

The KU Leuven delegation's stay at the UMCS included a tour of the University's campus, a visit to the Faculty of Earth and Spatial Sciences, and a walk through the UMCS Botanical Garden. During the joint meetings, Dr Jolanta Rodzoś, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Spatial Management, presented the Faculty's educational offer and the research problems of the Institute of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management, while Professor Agnieszka Pidek, Deputy Director of the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences, presented the research conducted in her unit. During the walk, the staff of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University Botanical Garden showed the collections of plants gathered there.

The delegation from KU Leuven also met with Professor Radosław Dobrowolski, rector of the UMCS. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the possibilities for cooperation between the two universities and to exchange experiences in research and student education. On the same day, the Belgian guests also visited the Old Town of Lublin and the State Museum at Majdanek.

n spite of difficult weather conditions, on 3 April this year the participants of the trip visited the area of the planned Małopolski Przełom Wisły Geopark in the Kazimierz Dolny region. Prof. Wojciech Zgłobicki, Ph.D., presented geological and geomorphological values of our region and the results of studies conducted at the Lublin geographic centre on historical gully erosion.

In the following days, the Belgians will visit Zamość, the Roztocze National Park, the projected Kamienny Las Geopark in Roztocze, and selected geostations of the Świętokrzyskie and Małopolska regions.
