Virtual Days of Science in Lublin: Solar storms – beautiful but dangerous!

"Solar storms are beautiful but dangerous!" is the title of the lecture that will be broadcast on September 22nd during the first day of Virtual Days of Science in Lublin. The author of the speech is prof. dr Stefaan Poedts from the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, UMCS.

Solar storms: beautiful but dangerous!

Solar storms are the most violent phenomena in the solar system. They are so energetic that they can affect Earth and damage our technical equipment, including satellites, the electric power grid, oil and gas pipelines, etc., affecting telecommunication and navigation (GPS) systems and electric power distribution. The socio-economic impact of space weather is enormous. We developed models to predict the space weather.

EUHFORIA is a tool to model the solar wind and the propagation of the coronal mass ejections that occur during such storms, and PARADISE, a tool to predict the energetic particle accelerations that are induced by solar flares and coronal mass ejections. In our European project, we will combine these two models to create the most powerful space weather prediction tool. EUHFORIA in PARADISE!

Dr. Stefaan Poedts is prodessor at the Institute of Physics, UCMS, and at the Department of Mathematics of KU Leuven (Belgium). Prof. Poedts co-authored three CUP Books, viz. "Principles of MHD" (Goedbloed and Poedts, 2004) and "Advanced MHD" (Goedbloed, Keppens and Poedts, 2010), and "MHD of Laboratory and Astrophysical Plasmas" (Goedbloed, Keppens and Poedts), Cambridge University Press, Jan 2019. He co-authored more than 350 papers in international reviewed journals, 190 papers in procs. of int. conferences, and 6 'outreach' publications. Together, his papers have been cited 5440+ times so far (ISI Web of Knowledge, 8420+ times in Google Scholar, 5630+ times in ADS). His current h-index is 37 in ISI Web of Science, 36 in ADS and 44 in Google Scholar (i-10 index = 201). Since June 2012, he is Chair of the ESA Space Weather Working Team (SWWT, member since 2002). He is currently leading the EU H2020 Projects EUHFORIA 2.0 and MEESST and participates in two other H2020 projects, viz. SafeSpace and SWATNET, and two related ESA projects.

We invite you to visit the website of the Lublin University of Inspiration, where a detailed program is available and the event will be broadcast.

The event was co-financed by the "Social Responsibility of Science" program of the Minister of Science and Higher Education.
