The results of the 1st competition of the 17th Lublin Science Festival "What science looks like"

The seventeenth edition of the Lublin Science Festival will be held from 18th to 24th September 2021 in Lublin under the slogan "Science without borders. Enjoy science! ”. On 11th-12th January, the first in a series of competitions as part of the entire event, "What science looks like", was held.

The competition aimed to select the best project - the prototype of the LFN mascot, which would reflect the most important values, ideals and mission of the festival and encourage the exploration of the fascinating world of science. The competition was international and was aimed at children, primary and secondary school students, students and adults. Over forty interesting and creative entries from Poland and abroad were submitted to the competition.

The youngest participant of the competition was 7 years old, and the oldest - 38 years old. Versatile scientist Doctor Pi, Panda Red, scientist mouse, a mythical cat named Saky, Happy Chromosom, chemist, teddy bear with a head full of ideas, Ninja - who has books instead of swords, hardworking and versatile Mr Brain, Reflectin, Smartosaurus or Isaac Newton.

After long deliberations, the jury decided not to select a winner and to award three distinctions. The first honorary mention was given to Ms Katarzyna Gromada, presenting the Lublin Goat in a scientific version. In the author's interpretation, the mascot took the form of a ball with a protruding head and hooves. Additionally, it has an imprint on the apron with elements of science and a string over the spine that allows it to be hung.

Another distinction was given to the design of Ms Natalia Siwko, which, like the previous one, shows a goat referring to the coat of arms of the City of Lublin. As the author writes: “The delicate beige colour is supposed to evoke sympathy for the mascot. The goat is wearing a T-shirt with a graphic combination of a light bulb, which symbolises an idea and a brain - a symbol of wisdom. A reference to the university is the blue cap on the goat's head ”.

The third and last distinction in the competition was awarded to Ms Kinga Ciszak, who designed the Lublin Science Festival mascot in the shape of an owl. In this case, let us quote the description of the author's competition entry in full: “So what does science look like? We associate owls with wisdom and symbolize science, which is why my choice fell on this bird. I wanted the mascot to be colourful because the natural colours are rather gloomy, and science is not at all - it is interesting and diverse! I hope that this figure will also have the audience ”.

We sincerely congratulate the distinguished persons, and we also thank everyone for participating in the competition, particularly the students of the Primary School with Integration Branches "Skala" in Lublin, who was very involved in the design of the festival's mascot.
