European Centre UMCS

The European Centre UMCS was created under the Decree № 36/2018 of the Rector of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin on May 30, 2018 on the establishment of a university-wide organizational unit, the European Centre of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University. Pursuant to § 3 of the Ordinance, the Centre conducts research and teaching activities in the field of European integration issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.

 The establishment of the Centre was a continuation of long-term cooperation between UMCS (mainly within the Department of EU Law, Faculty of Law and Administration of UMCS) and the University European Center in Nancy (France), initiated by dr hab. Ewa Skrzydło-Tefelska and prof. Jean-Denis Mouton.

 In July 2017, prof. dr hab. Stanisław Michałowski, UMCS Rector, together with the Mayor of the City of Lublin Krzysztof Żuk Ph.D., initiated the commencement of work on the establishment of the European Centre UMCS. On August 14, 2017, the Rector and representatives of UMCS met with the authorities of the City of Lublin and the Mayor of the City of Nancy Laurent Hénart, representatives of the City of Nancy (Lublin's partner city) and the European Center of the University of Lorraine. The meeting was also attended by Czesław Bartela, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland (Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Nancy), who was one of the originators of the establishment of the European Centre in Lublin. During the meeting, a schedule of activities aimed at establishing the European Centre UMCS was established, as well as the basic principles of cooperation between the partners. In the period until May 2018, intensive preparations for the establishment of the Centre were carried out, in which a large role was played by the cooperation of the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of UMCS (prof. Marek Pietraś, prof. Walenty Baluk, Julita Rybczyńska Ph.D.) and the Faculty of Law and Administration of UMCS (prof. dr hab. Anna Przyborowska-Klimczak, Kinga Wernicka Ph.D.). The interest on the part of many partner Ukrainian universities in undertaking research and teaching cooperation in the field of European integration also contributed to the success of the project.

 On November 28, 2017, the letter of intent was signed in order for the Parties to undertake actions aimed at establishing the European Centre UMCS. The letter was signed by representatives of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, the University of Lorraine, the University European Center in Nancy (CEU), the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk and the City of Lublin and the City of Nancy.

 The cooperation agreement signed on May 7, 2018 between the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, the University of Lorraine, the University European Center in Nancy (CEU), the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University in Ivano-Frankivsk, as well as the Municipality of Lublin and the City of Nancy, was aimed at taking the necessary steps to establish the European Centre in Lublin that would conduct research and teaching activities in the field of European integration issues from an interdisciplinary perspective.

On June 1, 2018, the European Centre of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University started its operation on the basis of the Ordinance № 36/2018 of the Rector of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin of May 30, 2018 on the establishment of a university-wide organizational unit, the European Centre of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
