History

In 1967, the Laboratory of Bacterial Chemistry was established together with the Isotope Laboratory as part of the Department of Microbiology at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences. In 1970, the Laboratory was transformed into an independent scientific unit: the Department of Molecular Biology at the Institute of Microbiology, Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences. In subsequent years, the Department was part of the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology. In the 1970-1993, the Department was headed by prof. dr hab. Eugeniusz Gąsior. In 1993, he was succeeded by prof. dr hab. Nikodem Grankowski, who held the function until 2012, when prof. dr hab. Marek Tchórzewski was appointed the Head of the Department. In 2019, the Department of Molecular Biology became part of the Institute of Biological Sciences.

Current research topics

Three research issues are addressed in the Department by three research teams:

  • regulation of the expression of genetic information at the translational level; the role of ribosomal proteins, elucidation of their structure and function in terms of the functions of the ribosome as a key element in the control of genetic information at the translatome level; elucidation of mechanisms governing the interactions between the ribosome and protein factors exerting positive and negative modifying effects on its activity;
  • role of the so-called specialised ribosomes in the regulation of the expression of genetic information at the translational level, also at the stage of formation of spores in a Bacillus subtilis model; the aim of the research is to identify determinants of ribosomal heterogeneity and to identify modifications of the genetic information flow induced by the ribosome diversity at an important bacterial life stage, i.e. spore formation;
  • regulation of amino acid transport via membrane amino acid transporters with particular emphasis on the endoplasmic reticulum; mechanisms regulating their post-translational modification, i.e. glycosylation; identification of enzymes and other proteins regulating the post-translational modification of transporters in the trans-Golgi compartment and determining their delivery onto the cell membrane in changing environmental conditions

Laboratories

  • “Environmental Laboratory for Intravital Cell Imaging” - an element of the nationwide equipment base called the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Functional Nanomaterials NanoFun. The core of the system is the image acquisition system based on a uniquely equipped confocal microscope. The system facilitates investigations of a variety of cellular processes at the molecular level in a single living cell and in a large group of cells on a scale of picoseconds, minutes, hours, or days;
  • Laboratory of Translational Control (laboratory of regulation of genetic information expression at the translational level);
  • Laboratory of Gene Expression
  • Laboratory of Amino Acid Metabolism
