UMCS Library

The Main Library is a university unit brought to life in order to carry out its scientific and didactic tasks by providing an access to knowledge resources stored in traditional as well as electronic form. It coordinates operations of the entire library and information system of UMCS, which also includes 18 specialized libraries operating in various faculties, institutes, and non-faculty units. The system resources contain over 2.6M of traditional titles: books, journals, the oldest written texts, as well as graphic, cartographic, and musical collections. The resources are being increased by about 52 thousand items annually. They can be accessed from 6 reading rooms in the Main Library, and 22 corresponding rooms located in specialized libraries. In 2013, the Main Library provided free access to a part of its resources. The resources of the Main Library amount to 1,6M items. In 2012, their number was increased by 28 956 thousand. Digital resources of the licensed databases contain about 54 thousand journals and around 7 thousand books. The Digital Library of UMCS provides access to about 5,500 thousand publications.

Information-related activities carried out by the body in question include: giving bibliographic and cartographic information, creating bibliographic sets, providing help in using databases and searching for information in the collections of Polish and foreign libraries. Didactic tasks are carried out traditionally and online. The Library publishes the peer-reviewed academic journal, “Folia Bibliologica” (in cooperation with the UMCS Institute of Library and Information Science), as well as two series of publications: “The works of the UMCS Library” and “The personal bibliographies”. The unit participates in the implementing a project “Virtual Library of Lublin City” aimed to create an integrated platform for quick and common access to digital resources of libraries and cultural institutions in Lublin region.
